Welcome

Welcome to Class 4!

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to school.

We hope you all had a very enjoyable holiday and are feeling refreshed for the final half term in Year 1!

English: The children will spend time learning the text ‘Don’t Spill The Milk’ by Stephen Davies. This is a story about a journey with a twist at the end. The children will be writing their own stories based on the text. We will be continuing to write in all areas of the curriculum and encouraging the children to always ensure that they are using everything they know about writing, whenever they write. Please encourage your child to use all of their knowledge when they are writing at home too. We would like the children to bring in what they have done to show off their writing skills! The skills we are looking for are:
  • Writing in full sentences that make sense.
  • Punctuating their sentences correctly using a capital letter, full stop/question mark/exclamation mark.
  • Using the suffixes that they have learnt – s, es, ed, ing, er, est
  • Neat handwriting sitting on the line.
  • Joining some short sentences together using words like ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘because’.

Maths: We will be learning about Time and Position and Turns, and we will also be consolidating all of the number work that we have learnt this year, including place value, number bonds, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division.

Science: The children will be learning all about animals; what animals eat – carnivores, herbivores and omnivores; naming and describing animal body parts; grouping animals into fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. We will celebrate all that we have learnt by visiting Paignton Zoo to see a wide range of animals that we have learnt about in real life.

History: The children will be learning about Kings and Queens and we will teach the children about some of the significant British monarchs in history. We will look at timelines and family trees to find out more and consider what sources of information are reliable when finding out about the past. They will look in some detail at Richard III, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria and demonstrate their understanding of what they have been taught in different ways including role play and debate.

Art: The children will be learning about different kinds of nature sculptures and exploring the work of Andy Goldsworthy and other environmental artists. We will look at different techniques using natural materials including model making, observational drawing, land art and group sculpture building. If you are able to bring in any natural objects and materials from any days out to the beach, the woods or the park such as leaves, twigs, sticks, pebbles, shells or pine cones, they would be gratefully received! We will be trying to create a collection to help us create our sculptures and big builds.
